Shirecliffe Forum Hub Project

Bauman Lyons Architect Ltd. were appointed to the project through the SOAR regeneration initiative to develop an existing Community Centre into a joint facility with Surestart. The brief emphasised the desire for high quality and contemporary design.

The existing Shirecliffe Community Hall has been retained and refurbished, a single storey extension to the west and north sides was demolished and replaced by a two storey new build element, accommodating meeting rooms and lettable workspace.

The Sure Start Children's Centre facility is a two storey building, linked to the community hub with a glazed reception area shared by both buildings. The reception link is designed to offer glimpses of the ancient woodland and play areas located safely away from the street to the rear of the building. The Children’s Centre provides crèche and nursery facilities for the Community alongside training rooms for parents and staff accommodation.

The concept evolved around the existing building, and the desire to create a contrast between an urban presence to the street frontage and a rural presence to the woodland at the rear. This is reflected in the choice of the cladding materials.
